Skala Marion — the village at the end of the road
Skala Marion (or Skala Maries) is a small fishing village on the south-west coast of Thassos, around 30 km from Limenas, the island capital. With a permanent population of about 400 residents, it is one of the quietest and most authentic places in Thassos — far from the crowds of the larger tourist resorts.
The history of the village is linked to Maries, the hill settlement for which it served as a natural port. Over the centuries, locals came down to the sea for fishing and trade. Until 1926, the area was influenced by monasteries from Mount Athos — three metochia (Karakallou, Stavronikita and Xeropotamou) operated near the village, leaving visible traces in the local architecture.
Today, life in Skala Marion follows the rhythm of the sea. Fishermen pull their boats ashore every morning, and the fish goes straight to the tavernas by the beach. The local economy is based on fishing, olive oil production, a centuries-old island tradition, and increasingly on tourism.
The village stretches across three small bays: Platanes beach, the largest, with fine sand; the port beach, small, with natural shade, next to the tavernas; and Atspas beach, with golden sand, crystal-clear water and spectacular sunset views. All three are uncrowded and free to access.
The west coast of the island means one thing: unforgettable sunsets. The sun drops over the Aegean Sea every evening, and from Motorship beach the show feels almost unreal. It is probably the most beautiful sunset in Thassos.
